DISCLAIMER:
this is a basic guideline. Different styles and applications may call for different aftercare methods.
always follow aftercare instructions given by your artist.
*Make sure you ALWAYS handle your tattoo with clean hands in order to prevent infection or irritation.*
DAY
1-3
-
Carefully remove and discard your bandage after your artist's recommended time.
-
Gently wash your tattoo with unscented antibacterial soap twice per day (i.e. Dial Gold). Do not use rags or exfoliants.
-
Air dry or pat dry with a clean paper towel. Try to avoid bath towels since they may carry fragrances from detergents or leave irritants or bacteria on your tattoo.
-
Gently apply unscented, water-based lotion (i.e. Lubriderm, Cetaphil, etc.)
-
If you opt for ointments (Aquaphor, A+D), make sure you add sparingly. You should barely see any shine on your skin. Avoid oversaturating or smothering your tattoo.
DAY
3-5
-
Continue to wash your tattoo with mild soap twice per day and apply lotion.
-
At this point, your tattoo will begin to flake, peel, and itch.
-
Lotion can help reduce the itching sensation - you may apply as needed at this point.
-
Avoid picking at scabs or peeling the dead skin. This can pull out the ink and result in patching.
wk
4
-
Your tattoo should be mostly healed by now.
-
Skin may still be raised, especially in linework. This is normal and will take the most time to go down.
-
Tattoo balms/moisturizers and sunscreens are encouraged to maintain vibrancy.
-
Now is the optimal time to schedule a touch up (if needed) with your artist.
NO Direct sunlight or tanning
Yes, you can still go out and about. Just wear a good SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen and reapply as directed by your preferred brand.
NO SWIMMING OR BATHING
Chlorine, lake water, saltwater, bathwater, etc - all a risk on any open wound.
(This doesn't mean you can't shower for two weeks. Yes, that is a question we get.
NO PICKING OR SCRATCHING
Just in case you skimmed over it, it is super important to not pick or scratch. This is how we see ink pulling out the most. If you're feeling itchy, reapply unscented lotion.
If you experience excess swelling, redness, pain, discharge, or a high fever; and/or your tattoo starts to get hot to the touch, contact your healthcare provider. These could be signs of an infection.
